Course Description

Welcome to 7th grade math! This class will cover a variety of topics, including algebraic thinking, geometry, statistics, and more. Our goal is to build a solid foundation of mathematical skills that will prepare you for future learning. I am committed to supporting you as you grow and develop your math abilities this year.

I do have high expectations for all of my students to do what they can to be better than they were yesterday. This means I need you to lock in when you enter my class! I promise, if we can all stay on the same page with my expectations, policies, and procedures, then this could easily be the most fun math class you will ever have! This takes cooperation from everyone in the class which means I’m counting on you to familiarize yourself with this document so you can help your classmates make good decisions. 🙂

Grading Policy

Your grade will be determined by two categories:

Classwork – 60% of your grade

Assessments – 40% of your grade

Classwork Breakdown (60% of Grade):

  • (MXL) Math XL Assignments:
  • One for each topic lesson, worth 10 points.
  • These assignments must be submitted by the day of the Topic Assessment, or they will be marked as a zero.
  • (PPS) Textbook Practice and Problem Solving Pages:
  • Worth 15 points each.
  • If these pages are misplaced, you will need to complete a similar digital assignment on paper and turn in the handwritten version.
  • These assignments will also close on the day of the Topic Assessment.
  • (SM) Weekly Success Maker Minutes:
  • Complete 60 minutes each week, worth 6 points (1 point per 10 minutes).
  • You will be given the first 10 minutes of class daily to work on Success Maker. You must be in your seat with Success Maker open by the time the bell rings. After these 10 minutes, you will transition to your daily bellwork assignment.
  • Absence Note: You will not be responsible for Success Maker minutes if you are absent three or more days in a week.
  • (SR) Spiral Review:
  • A paper copy will be provided at the start of the week and is due at the end.
  • You will only receive one paper copy. If you lose your copy, you will need to handwrite the assignment from the digital copy and submit the handwritten version.
  • 10 points each
  • (CP) Weekly Bellwork Checkpoint:
  • 5 points each week.
  • (VQ) Topic Vocabulary Quiz:
  • Worth 10 points per quiz.
  • (CW) Other Daily Classwork Grades:
  • May vary in type but will be graded out of 10 points.

Assessments (40% of Grade):

Assessments include tests, quizzes, and major evaluations that measure your understanding of the material.

  • Late Submissions: All classwork assignments are considered missing until turned in. You can submit classwork up until the day of the Topic Assessment. Once the Topic Assessment day ends, all assignments related to that topic will be closed for submission.
  • Absence Policy: If you are absent, you will have the same number of days you were absent past the assessment date to turn in your assignments and complete the assessment. This must be done during individual work time or outside of class.
  • Submitting Digital Assignments Late: If you submit a digital assignment after the initial assigned day, you must write a note on paper and place it in the turn-in bin to inform me that you submitted the assignment online.

Homework Policy:

The only homework assigned will be classwork that wasn’t completed during class time. No additional homework will be given unless you need extra practice on a topic.

Classroom Expectations

Assigned Seating:

You must remain in your assigned seat when I am addressing the class. You may only leave your seat during independent work or after raising your hand and receiving permission.

**Students will be given one warning for this per class before receiving a discipline step.

Hallway Policies:

  • You may not use the restroom during the first or last 10 minutes of class, or while I am instructing the class, unless it’s a true emergency. Abusing this policy will result in a call home to your guardian.
  • You must sign out using the digital hall pass system on the kiosk computer before leaving the room.
  • You will only be allowed to go to the library during class for laptop issues.

Dismissal Policies:

  • You must remain seated in your assigned seat.
  • You will wait until your transportation method is called to leave your seat, put your chair on your desk, put your book away, and plug in your laptop unless otherwise given permission by me.
  • The class will have one warning for noise levels during dismissal before I will enforce a silent dismissal. Students who are out of their seats, or talking during silent dismissal will receive a discipline step.

Classroom Cleanliness:

I’ve worked to build a culture of "one class" where we all take responsibility for our shared space. Everyone is expected to clean up after themselves and help keep the classroom tidy. This includes pushing in chairs, picking up materials, throwing away trash, and ensuring the space is ready for the next class.

Behavior and Respect

In our class, we hold respect as a core value. This means:

Respect for Yourself and Your Learning Journey:

Take pride in your work and give your best effort. Every mistake is a learning opportunity.

Respect for Others and Their Differences:

Understand that everyone learns differently. Be supportive and kind to your classmates.

Respect for the Teacher:

Show respect by actively listening, participating, and informing me when you don’t understand something or have missed a part of the lesson. This includes respect for provided supplies.

**I understand challenges with attention, processing, and sensory issues, but it is your responsibility to let me know if you are struggling. I will adjust the class as needed to support your unique needs.

**Per schoolwide discipline policy, disrespect will result in an automatic dean referral. I hold a zero tolerance policy for disrespect and have high expectations for students in this area of behavior.

Discipline Policy

Our classroom follows the school-wide discipline plan to maintain a respectful and productive environment. The following steps will be taken if a student does not meet behavior expectations:

  • Warning – Parent contact.
  • Written Assignment/Reflection – Parent contact.
  • Dean Conference – Parent contact from both the teacher and Dean.
  • Early Morning School (7:15 – 7:55 AM, Mon/Wed/Fri) – Parent verification required (Teacher coordinates with Mr. Gray).
  • Period X (3:15 – 4:15 PM, Tues/Thurs) – Parent verification required (Teacher coordinates with Mr. Gray).
  • Dean Referral – Parent contact from both the teacher and the Dean.

School-Wide Grading Policy Summary

  • Students can improve grades on summative assessments through retakes, corrections, or alternative assignments, but remediation (extra work or parent signature) is required before a retake.
  • Communication about grade improvement options will be provided before the original test.
  • Late work will be accepted until the end of the day of the Topic Assessment. (unless otherwise arranged with me.)
  • Make-up work due to absence must be completed within the same number of days missed past the Topic Assessment date.
  • Grades will reflect learning, not behavior or formatting issues (e.g., wrong ink color).
  • A minimum of 15 graded assignments will be recorded each nine weeks.
  • No extra credit will be given.
