CS General Information

Hello and welcome to our Computer Science webpage.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION: 

This 9-week course is designed to help students understand the basic operations and concepts of technology, with specific emphasis on basic computer/operating system navigation and usage, computer/technology related vocabulary, proper keyboarding techniques. In the transition to Middle School Computer Science, students will also study: Foundational Concepts, Data Analysis, Networking and the Internet, Impacts of Computing, Algorithmic Thinking, and Programming Concepts.

 

COURSE LEARNING TARGETS:

  1. Demonstrate fundamental technology skills
  2. Use age-appropriate online tools and resources (tutorials, assessment, and web browser)
  3. Use appropriate word processing, spreadsheets, and multimedia applications
  4. Use menu, toolbar, and editing functions (font/size/line spacing, margins, spellcheck) to format, edit, save, share, and create URL links
  5. Construct optimized models of computing systems.
  6. Explain responsible uses of technology and digital information; describe possible consequences of inappropriate use such as copyright infringement and piracy
  7. Exhibit a positive mindset toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity
  8. Use a variety of digital tools and resources to develop research, writing, and literacy across the core subject areas
  9. Explore ways computer science can be used to solve problems and perform a variety of tasks that can make our lives safer and more productive.
  10. Explore career paths in computer science.
  11. Develop code to solve a problem and use and troubleshoot existing code.

 

GRADING:

Schoolwide policy is that 60% of the student's grade will be classwork and other daily assignments with the remaining 40% be assessment grades. Assessments in this class include timed Typing Tests, an email etiquette test, posture checks, and other projects. Daily work grades include the completion of modules in Typing Club (for keyboarding) and other daily assignments to show mastery of the learning targets listed above.
